“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28-30 MSG)
The unforced rhythms of grace.
Like the perfect lullaby, they caress you, gently rocking and lulling you into peaceful rest.
A love song written for your heart.
The perfect recipe for an escape from it all.
Get away. Recover. Rest.
Nothing heavy. Perfectly fitting. Free. Light.
Can’t you picture it? Don’t you want that?
I do. So much. I ache for it.
In a moment of utter weakness, on a day when failure hides in the shadows taunting me, when emotions are running high and strength is running low, I slam into this verse and I answer every one of Jesus’ questions with a resounding, “Yes!”
Yes, I’m tired.
I’m weary. I’m spent. I’m not sure what comes next.
My patience is thin and the burden is heavy.
Yes, I’m worn out.
I’ve fought a good fight, but fear and uncertainty have won a few rounds.
My brave took a beating.
Yes, I’m burned out on religion.
The kind that says, be perfect, fit our mold. The lies the enemy whispers. The people who wear righteousness and wield it as a weapon. The ones who hoard grace. They break my heart, they burn me out.
But Truth says, watch. Jesus says, walk with Me.
Learn the unforced rhythm of grace.
No pressure, no pretense, no weight on your shoulders.
It’s a sweet sigh. A gentle touch.
I stumbled on His word tonight, but it was no accident.
His promises wait to refresh us in our darkest moments.
They meet us, purposed to never return void.
Seek. Drink deep. Taste the water of His word that lives and breathes new life. It’s a cool cup of water. A healing balm for the battered soul.
It’s the best kind of retreat – all expenses paid through nail pierced hands.
Hands that promise to hold you up, to protect, to provide – to rescue.
When there is nothing left to do…surrender.
When you’re too tired to even imagine one more step…be still.
When you’ve been burned out or burned through…watch Him fight for you.
When you’ve reached the end of yourself…let His word whisper grace.
This day is done and I lay it down. It wrung me dry.
Will there be others like it? You bet. Probably a bunch.
So I learn the unforced rhythms of grace – practice, study the art of receiving it, extending it, lingering in it, and trusting that grace is a fountain we cannot quench. There isn’t enough failure in the world to separate us from that kind of relentless love.
Return to Him. Rest. Live free. Be light.
Keep company with Him. You are not alone.
